Program Abstract: Each year, more than 33 million Americans use health care services for their mental health problems and illnesses or conditions resulting from their misuse of alcohol, prescription medications, and illegal drugs. Experts say that effective treatments exist and continually improve. However, as with general health care, deficiencies in care delivery prevent many from receiving appropriate treatments. This program will examine a recent Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on improving the quality of care for persons with co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions and identify policies and action steps needed from State, local, and Federal governments; health care organizations; and others to help ensure Americans receive appropriate treatments.
