Substance Abuse Prevention Dollars and Cents: A Cost-Benefit Analysis
This report summarizes existing estimates of the cost of substance abuse and its damaging consequences. These cost estimates are used to evaluate the benefits of prevention in existing cost-benefit analyses and are available for use in new analyses. The estimates reviewed highlight the total annual cost of substance abuse from a number of perspectives including social cost and the direct costs to State government. The social perspective includes everyone's costs and benefits: People who abuse substances, family members, the general public, communities, and all level of government (Federal, State, and local).

What Are Peer Recovery Support Services?
This Technical Assistance Guide, "What are Recovery Support Services," describes the types of social support that individuals in recovery from addiction can provide to others. The therapeutic value of the shared experience of addiction and recovery from addiction is explained, as well as the four types of social support that facilitate recovery and help prevent relapse.

2008 Town Hall Meetings: Mobilizing Communities to Prevent and Reduce Underage Alcohol Use Evaluation Report
This report is one of two documents reflecting the activities of the 2008 Town Hall Meetings. It documents how the Town Hall Meetings contributed to the implementation of the Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking and includes discussion of the challenges that confronted CBOs and recommendations for future Town Hall Meetings.

The NSDUH Report October 15, 2009: Trends in Tobacco Use among Adolescents: 2002 to 2008
The prevalence of past month use of any tobacco products among adolescents (youths aged 12 to 17) declines between 2002 and 2008, from 15.2 to 11.4 percent. The decline in past month tobacco use can be attributed primarily to a decline in past month cigarette use- the most frequently used tobacco product- with 13.0 percent of adolescents using cigarettes in 2002 compared with 9.1 percent in 2008.

The NSSATS Report October 22, 2009: Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Facilities Offering Residential Beds for Clients Children
In 2007, 7 percent of outpatient treatment facilities also offered child care services for their clients' children. Outpatient-only facilities that provided child care for clients' children were more likely than facilities that did not to use a sliding fee scale (81 vs. 67 percent), to offer treatment at no charge to clients who cannot afford to pay (75 vs. 47 percent), or to accept Medicaid payments (75 vs. 58 percent).

The NSSATS Report October 22, 2009: Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Facilities that Provide Child Care for Their Clients' Children
In 2007, 803 facilities that offered outpatient substance abuse treatment (or 7 percent of all such facilities) also offered child care services for their clients' children, and 598 of these facilities offered only outpatient treatment (no hospital inpatient or residential treatment) in conjunction with child care.

The NSDUH Report September 24, 2009: Cigarette Use among Adults Employed Full Time, by Occupational Category
Based on combined 2006 to 2008 NSDUH data, an estimated 33.6 million full-time employees aged 18 to 64 smoked cigarettes in the past month.

The NSDUH Report October 8, 2009: Mental Health Support and Self-Help Groups
An annual average of 2.4 million adults aged 18 or older (1.1 percent of the population in that age group) received support from a mental health self-help group for their emotions, nerves, or mental health problems in the past year. Of them, 61.2 percent were female; 89.4 percent were over the age of 25; 75.2 percent were white; and, 46.8 percent were employed full time.

The TEDS Report September 3, 2009: School System Referrals to Substance Abuse Treatment
Regardless of gender, adolescents and children referred to substance abuse treatment by the educational system were more likely than those referred by the criminal justice system to report primary alcohol abuse but less likely to report primary marijuana abuse.

The NSDUH Report September 17, 2009: Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors among Adults
In 2008, an estimated 8.3 million adults aged 18 or older (3.7 percent of the adult population) had serious thoughts of suicide in the past year; 2.3 million (1.0 percent) made a suicide plan; and, 1.1 million (0.5 percent) attempted suicide.
