This landmark publication provides scientific information about the disease of drug addiction, including the many harmful consequences of drug abuse and the basic approaches that have been developed to prevent and treat the disease, and aims to increase understanding of the basics of addiction to help people make informed choices in their own lives, adopt science-based policies and programs that reduce drug abuse and addiction in their communities, and support scientific research that improves the Nation's well-being.

The NSDUH Report: Patterns and Trends in Inhalant Use by Adolescent Males and Females, 2002-2005
The NSDUH Report: Patterns and Trends in Inhalant Use by Adolescent Males and Females, 2002-2005, a 3 page short report, based on SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), provides data on specific types of inhalants used by new inhalant users and changes from 2002 to 2005 in rates by gender.

Drug Abuse Warning Network, 2005: National Estimates of Drug-Related Emergency Department Visits
This report presents national estimates of drug-related visits to hospital emergency departments for 2005, based on data from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN). The 2005 estimates from DAWN provide the first opportunity since the redesign of DAWN to examine changes over time in drug-related emergency department (ED) visits.

This reference card for parents provides easy-to-follow tips on starting crucial conversations with teens on tough topics, including drug use. Produced in partnership with VitalSmarts, a research company, and the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, the card offers research-based tips for initiating tough but vital parent-child conversation. This free resource is available to all parents, caregivers, and community groups.

Science-Based Substance Abuse Prevention Planning System Now Available to States
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced the availability of Communities That Care (CTC) -- a science-based substance abuse prevention planning system for use by States and communities to help prevent drug and alcohol abuse before it starts. CTC models a community-wide approach to prevention that also enables communities to select the right substance use prevention program for their needs in preventing substance abuse problems. CTC helps communities monitor and improve overall program quality, and ultimately prevention practice.
