Substance Abuse Resource Guide:
Older Americans

October 1997

Table of Contents

From the Directors of SAMHSA/CSAP...

Substance abuse affects everyone in our society, including older Americans. However, many of the risk factors for substance abuse are different for the elderly, such as age-related stress, loss of employment, loss of a spouse, and the mixing of prescription drugs with other substances, especially alcohol. Prevention specialists, community leaders, and educators need very specific information to help them in working with the elderly.

SAMHSA/CSAP is committed to meeting the prevention needs of all populations nad age groups in our society. As a result, this Resource Guide was developed to provide important information on locating appropriate resources related to substance abuse prevention among the elderly. We have included articles and reports from peer-reviewed journals and books, lists of materials with clear prevention messages, and a referral list of other groups, organizations, and programs.
