The use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs during pregnancy is a leading preventable
cause of mental, physical, and psychological impairments and problems in infants
and children. Pregnant women who use drugs and consume alcohol can give birth
to addicted babies or to babies with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), a leading
cause of mental retardation.
This Resource Guide provides important information to help prevention
specialists, health care providers, and community leaders develop effective
prevention messages and programs for pregnant women. It includes a diverse
selection of materials with clear prevention messages, information on articles
and reports from peer reviewed journals and books, and a referral list of
additional groups, organizations, and programs.
SAMHSA and CSAP remain strongly committed to protecting the health and
well-being of pregnant women and their unborn children.
